We all have conversations that we dread, avoid, or face up to with high anxiety. What is it that makes these conversations difficult? How can we manage them more effectively and maintain productive discussions in the face of strong feelings and difficult issues? Based, in large part, on the research and writing out of Harvard’s Program on Negotiation, this course offers an array of skills and concepts that will enhance your ability to handle these conversations well. We will use case studies, video snippets, and small group discussion and exercises to help participants come away with more confidence and skill in managing difficult conversations.

Topics of Discussion

  • Better understanding of what makes certain conversations so difficult
  • A framework for learning how to avoid common mistakes that even the most effective communicators make
  • Skills for breaking the cycle of blame, managing high emotion, and keeping the conversation on track
  • Skills for keeping your own balance, even when someone else does not
  • A step-by-step “How To” for handling difficult conversations
Audience: Managers, Support Staff and anyone interested in improving their interpersonal communication skills
