Wages and salary affect the hire and retention of skilled personnel like no other factor. Salary issues also have the power to arouse suspicion in the workplace. Job satisfaction is related to pay equity and fifty-four percent of librarians believe that they are underpaid. Between 50 and 70% of a public library's budget is personnel related, and decisions about wages, salaries and benefits have a dramatic impact on resources. Administrators walk a fine line to please staff, boards, and their public.

This workshop provides an overview of wage and salary administration as it relates to libraries. Areas covered include important principles involved in wage and salary administration, the components of wage and salary systems, legal considerations, the job survey and analysis process, and alternative compensation systems.

Audience: Human Resource Administrators and Library Directors
Dr. Richard Rubin is the director of the School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University. His research has examined human resource management, library administration, intellectual freedom and censorship. Dr. Rubin has penned numerous publications about affiliate program including Foundations of Library and Information Science published in 1998.
