Library policies are integral to library operation because they provide the mechanism for library managers and staff to translate the library's service priorities into action. Yet how many policies are poorly written, hard to understand, hard to implement, or out of date? This how-to workshop will define the purpose of library policies, outline the characteristics of effective policy manuals, and detail the necessary tasks and steps to take when auditing or developing policy. Based on the newest PLA Results Series publication, Sandra Nelson will guide participants through a process guaranteed to show results if followed. She will also discuss the challenges each library faces when choosing to Create Policies for Results.

Presenter:
Sandra Nelson is a consultant and trainer and hs been presenting library-training programs nation wide since 1974. She chaired the committee that developed the new Public Library Association (PLA) planning process and has authored Planning for Results: A Library Transformation Process. She is the former assistant state librarian for planning and development for the state of Tennessee. Diane Mayo and Sandra Nelson have co-authored PLA’s technology planning guide for public libraries Wired for the Future: Developing Your Library Technology Plan and PLA’s management guide, Managing for Results: Effective Resource Allocation in Public Libraries.
