Principal Duties: | Under the supervision of the Coordinator for Bibliographic Services and Electronic Cataloging and in conjunction with Executive Librarian for Acquisitions and Electronic Publishing and the Senior Monographic Assistant this position is primarily responsible for assisting professional librarians with materials selection and information management activities. The incumbent is responsible for a wide variety of problem solving activities relating to the processing of monographic orders. Duties include routines related to reviewing order requests, downloading bibliographic records, attaching order records for a variety of monographic materials. This employee assists in elements involved in the acquisition of firm order monographic materials The Library Assistant in this position is also responsible for order receiving and copy cataloging activities related to the Library''s approval plan. This employee performs combined acquisitions and cataloging routines on a daily basis. Acquisitions activities include receiving approval books and firm order book sorting, processing, invoice preparation and database order updating. Copy cataloging activities include searching Euclid PLUS for cataloging copy, verifying accuracy of the bibliographic MARC record, editing if necessary, and/or item record creation. The Library Assistant also assists in the maintenance of the Euclid PLUS bibliographic database by searching and correcting authority records on a continuing basis. |
Qualifications/ Requirements: |
Minimum 2-3 years experience, preferably in a cataloging, acquisitions or collection management related position, experience with an online integrated library system is preferred. Ability to maintain high level of daily performance and to exercise judgment in scheduling of work and selling priorities, good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work with minimum amount of supervision. Demonstrated organizational and clerical skills, initiative, flexibility and willingness to work in a rapidly changing and creative environment. Experience with computer technology, including basic ability with personal computers, workstations and networks is required. Good working knowledge of basic office and bibliographic software, basic typing/keyboard skills are required. Accuracy is essential. College degree preferred. |
