Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is an innovative process that focuses on what works in an organization and then builds upon those core strengths. By taking a vigorous inventory of the organizationís strengths, library leaders can mobilize the organization and change the course of its future. Appreciative Inquiry enables organizations to approach change from a position of strength. Unlike traditional methods of change management, Appreciative Inquiry does not focus on solving problems and correcting areas of weakness. Instead, the process puts the organizationís focus on its positive experiences, positive attributes, and the successes of individuals and the organization as a whole. AI creates the capacity for an organization to envision how it can capitalize on its unique talents to accomplish future goals.

Created in Cleveland, at CWRU Weatherhead School of Management, AI has gained international attention as its use has spread among nonprofit, for profit and governmental organizations throughout the world. CWRU created the tool in 1990 and continues its research in discovering new applications. Weatherhead most recently utilized the tool in its own strategic planning process.
